Secure Online Payments – How eMATES Supports Adults in Using Electronic Banking

In a world where more and more everyday tasks are handled online, the ability to use electronic banking has become essential. For adult learners with a migrant background who are simultaneously learning the language of the host country, accessing financial services can be challenging — both linguistically and digitally. The eMATES module dedicated to electronic banking and online payments directly responds to these needs.

The module was developed as part of a broader program supporting the digital and linguistic integration of adult learners. Its goal is to enable participants to use banking services safely, confidently, and independently — skills that are crucial for everyday functioning in a new country.

The module focuses on developing competencies that help users navigate the world of online banking with ease. These include basic banking vocabulary, performing simple banking operations, digital security, communication with financial institutions, and completing tasks in digital applications. By combining language learning with practical activities, participants not only acquire new vocabulary but also immediately apply it in everyday situations.

The content has been designed to reflect the most common actions performed by users of electronic banking. Participants learn, among other things: logging in and authentication, navigating the customer panel, making transfers and payments, using mobile payment methods, shopping safely online, recognizing digital threats, and contacting the bank via helpline, chat, or online forms. The materials follow CEFR levels, making them suitable for groups at A1, A2, and B1.

Electronic banking is one of the pillars of daily life — from paying bills to online shopping. For people learning a new language and adapting to a new environment, the ability to use financial services independently increases autonomy, strengthens the sense of security, supports social integration, reduces stress related to formalities, and helps them adjust more quickly to everyday realities.

The eMATES materials are practical, reflect real-life needs, and are adapted to learners’ levels, making them suitable for both formal education and integration courses.

The eMATES approach assumes that language learning should not be separated from the real needs of adult learners. Therefore, the module on electronic banking combines language education with digital competencies, supporting participants in building independence and confidence.

It is a practical tool that genuinely improves quality of life — enabling people to use services, understand messages, make decisions, and participate fully in their local community.
